Volunteer Positions
The Jamestown Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization and relies on the many members who volunteer their time to help things run smoothly. Instructions are provided for all roles. Here are some of the ways you can help in 2026:
Windmill Docent (late May to mid-October)
Spend from 1 to 4 PM on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Holiday welcoming visitors to the Windmill. Docents should be able to climb stairs, put out flags and signage, and walk on un-even ground. A cell phone is required in case of an emergency. For those who don’t want to spend three hours, we suggest finding a friend to split the time, so you each spend one and a half hours there. Contact the JHS at info@jhsri.org if you want help finding someone to share a date.
Museum Docent (late May to mid-October)
Spend from 1 to 4 PM on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Holiday welcoming visitors to the Museum.
House Tour Docent (September 19, from 10 AM to noon, or noon to 2 PM)
Spend two hours at the annual Jamestown Historical Society House Tour welcoming visitors. Docents will be able to visit all the houses on the tour before or after their shift.
Windmill Day (July 25 from 11 AM to 2 PM, shifts of 1-2 hours)
Volunteers are needed to set up and clean up, give tours of the Windmill put the sailcloths on, grill RI Jonnycakes, oversee the art table or games area, greet visitors, direct parking, or hang signs. Shifts are one or two hours. Sign up and we’ll be in touch to find out how you would like to help.
Other Events
The Jamestown Historical Society has several receptions, parties and fundraisers throughout the year. At each event, which generally run from 5 -7 PM, volunteers are needed to greet people at the registration table, direct parking, pass appetizers, and help with set up and clean up. Help preserve & share the history of Jamestown, RI. Maintain the Museum, the Windmill, the Meetinghouse and the Conanicut Battery. Preserve the Society’s collection of documents, photographs and artifacts.
