In the late 19thcentuy, Jamestown’s population ballooned and the number of farmers, who grew most of their own food, decreased. Purchased produce was in demand, and grocery stores proliferated.
In honor of Veterans’ Day, November 11, medals and certificates awarded to Jamestowners during World War I and World War II are on display in the JHS exhibit case in the foyer of the Jamestown Philomenian Library.
From 1922 to 1982, Jamestown had its own theatre – called the Palace at first and, after 1946, the Jamestown Theatre.
The new exhibit in the library show unusual envelopes in the JHS collection, ranging from late 19th century bills from Jamestown’s summer hotels that used drawings of the hotel as return addresses to fancy cancels in honor of Jamestown events.
The Jamestown Historical Society, working with the Newport Pell Bridge 50 th anniversary committee, has mounted two exhibits in the Jamestown Philomenian Library to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the Newport-Pell Bridge.

Manuel Dutra Lewis (1873-1968) and his wife Clara Silveira Furtado (1886-1923) were born in Fayal, the Azores. They met in Jamestown and were married here in 1906.

This Veterans Day is the 100th anniversary of the end of the armed conflict now known as World War I but known at the time as the Great War.
