The JHS has ribbons of many kinds. The October exhibit in the library shows a few of them.

Barbara Magruder, great-granddaughter of William Lincoln Bates who ran Dr. Bates Sanitarium in Jamestown from 1896 until his death in 1932, had already given the JHS many of Dr. Bates’ records.

William Foster “Babe” Caswell, worked for many years for the Jamestown & Newport Ferry Company – first as a fireman, then as one of the youngest engineers, and finally as manager.

Harry Shatzer (1879-1922) was born in Pennsylvania. He married Lulu Virginia Broll (1879-1945) of West Virginia in Baltimore in 1907, the year after he began coming to Jamestown for summer work.

Invitations have called Jamestowners to many events over the years. An invitation, hand-signed by John L. Smith, Chairman of the Jamestown Bridge Committee, invited the recipient and their guests to the dedication of the Jamestown Bridge on August 3, 1940.

Back in 1849, there was a New York City baseball team called the Knickerbockers. During their games, they wore straw caps to protect themselves from the sun. This was the first version of the billed cap we know as a baseball cap.

The JHS library exhibit for February displays some of the smaller signs and plaques from the Jamestown Historical Society’s collection of signs. Many of the larger ones are on permanent display in the town’s Recreation Center lobby and the back stairwell of Town Hall.

Some of the earliest donations to the Jamestown Historical Society collection reflect an age that in 1912 was just ending with the introduction of electricity.

For the December exhibit in the library, the Jamestown Historical Society joined forces with the Valmont “Bucky” Caswell Museum at the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department to show toy fire engines across the last century.

The JHS library exhibit for November displays a collection of boxes designed for many different uses. A tiny round ceramic snuff box used in the 19th century contained powdered tobacco.
