Jamestown became a flashpoint in the war between the British and their rebellious colony 250 years ago. On June 15, 1775, merchant John Brown’s sloop, Katy, fired the first naval salvos of the revolutionary war from 4-pound cannons at a British naval vessel off the north end of the island, forcing it ashore.
Camp Seaside Jamestown Rhode Island provided recuperation and recreation first for poor city dwellers and later for 4-H groups and campfire girls. By 1890 there were 342 children and adults listed.
One hundred years ago Azoreans brought both their faming skills and strict sense of economy to Jamestown where they made up almost 20 percent of the year round population.
The first Portuguese arrived in Jamestown during the late 1800s bringing with them their traditions and customs. Most were from the Azores.
Violations of civil rights took place in Jamestown Rhode Island and throughout the state during the 20th century including raids and deportations.
Since early times fishing has been both a business and a sport in Jamestown. The Jamestown Striper Club organized in the mid 20th century continues to teach fishing fundamentals to juniors.
On September 20th 1914 the steam ferry Conanicut was nearly destroyed by fire at the East Ferry Wharf. NW winds increased the ferocity of the fire. The Training Station assisted with its fireboat and truck.
The three connected houses at the corner of Walcott Ave and Racquet Rd, Jamestown RI include the 1889 Bleecker Box, later known as Brushwood.
Jamestown began discussing the need for more town office space in 1903. The biggest push for a new town hall came in the 1970s but it was 2005 before plans and money were approved.
Thomas G. Coates, M.D., grew up in Jamestown, and graduated from Howard University to become a respected physician in turn-of-the-century Philadelphia.
