There is something about living on an (small) island looking outward to the Atlantic Ocean. If you are not viewing Conanicut Island from above, in airplane, you may want to see it on a map.
We have many old and more recent maps of our island in our collection.
One of the oldest maps in our collection is a copy of a 1657 map of Conanicut Island. Please note that the map was drawn “upside down”, that is “south facing up”.
By 1870, Jamestown appeared “right-side up” in the D.G. Beers Atlas of the State of Rhode Island.
During the late 1800s, when tourism in Conanicut Island became popular, many maps showing different areas of Conanicut Island were produced.
More recently, in the 20th and 21st centuries, many souvenirs of our town have included images of maps.
