Decorative and Commemorative Plates
July Town Hall Exhibit 2025
Ceramics were often decorated as souvenirs to commemorate events or sites. The July exhibit in Town Hall displays eight such souvenir plates in the JHS collection.
The monthly Town Hall exhibits feature objects in the JHS collection seldom exhibited.
Two plates from 1967– one designed by Catharine Morris Wright (1899-1988) and the other designed by Constance W. Armbrust (1907-2008) – commemorate the 300th anniversary of the purchase of Conanicut and Dutch islands. The Wright plate depicts a Narragansett sachem and a colonial representative signing the sales agreement while the Armbrust plate has a map of Jamestown surrounded by drawings of significant sites on the island
Fort Dumpling, which stood on the eastern point of what is now Fort Wetherill in the late 19th century, and the 100th anniversary of the Bay Voyage Hotel, which was barged across the bay from Middletown in 1889, are also subjects of souvenir plates.
Other plates depict events throughout Rhode Island.
