Did you receive your copy of the 2024-25 Jamestown Telephone Directory? This directory is complied every year by the Jamestown Women’s Club of RI. It is published by The Jamestown Press, and it is mailed to all residents of the town of Jamestown. The profit generated by the ads in the directory is dispersed by the Women’s Club in support of a variety of public service projects in Jamestown.
The Jamestown Historical Society’s vault, in the basement of the Jamestown Town Hall, contains copies of 33 years of the Jamestown Telephone Directory. The earliest edition that we have is from 1976. Spanning the back and front covers, is a drawing of our island with interesting features of Jamestown.
Several editions of the telephone directory have original art work on the cover. The 1979-1980 edition has a drawing of Beavertail Light by Connie Armbrust. The 2022-23 edition has a drawing of sheep by Donald Mong.
On the cover of the 2006-07 edition of the telephone directory is a photo of the old Jamestown bridge being “blown-up” by a controlled demolition.
Starting with the 1982 edition, each directory has a full-page ad for “Art’s Auto Body” on the back cover.
The directory contains a variety of useful information for residents and visitors of Jamestown:
- a list of recyclable items,
- public services in Jamestown, including emergency numbers,
- a street map of Jamestown, with a list of all streets,
- Rhode Island postal ZIP codes, and
- the Advertising Index of all display ads.
By the 2010-2011 edition, many residents included their cell phones in addition to their land-lines.
