Celebrating milestones is something Jamestown does well, and the JHS archives are filled with memorabilia.
The town celebrated the country’s Bicentennial throughout 1976 with a special week in August. A Bicentennial Ball sponsored by the Junior Women’s club featured dinner and dancing for $15.00, but you had to come in costume. Other events included a Bicentennial pageant and a parade that highlighted George Washington crossing the island.
The beginning of the 21st century did not go unnoticed. One special project was the Millennial Quilt.
Quilt blocks were created by individuals, sewn together, and then quilted. The quilts were displayed at East Ferry, where people could autograph them. Ninety-two-year-old Connie Armbrust was given the honor of putting in the last stitch. The quilt now hangs in the library.
What celebration would be complete without a “family” photo? In September 1999, the town was invited to Fox Hill farm for a community photo. If you look closely, you will see a bride and groom who rushed to the site just after exchanging vows.
The semiquincentennial celebrating the 250th anniversary signing of the Declaration of Independence will have an equal number of activities, including a chance for Jamestowners to gather at Fort Getty for another community photo on May 16 at 1:30pm.
