February, 2026 Town Hall Exhibit
Stop in the foyer of the Town Hall to see this month’s exhibit from the JHS collection. The monthly Town Hall exhibits feature objects in the collection that are seldom exhibited.
The many skills of island women are shown this month. A needle point box for bridge tokens, a lace handkerchief, and an embroidered coaster are just some of the items.
At first look items in the exhibit might look like a “craft show”, and though the work is beautiful, the mastery of these skills at one point was an essential part of a girl’s education. Sewing clothes, knitting socks and creating pieces of art were important to showing standing in the community and pride in one’s home.
