“Between My ancestors and Me: The Gift and Power of Intergenerational Storytelling”

In 1990, Kimberly Conway Dumpson sought to learn more about her family’s history. After decades of research, travel to more than a dozen states, Ghana and Cuba, and a box of family letters dating back to the 1800s, Dumpson’s journey of discovery revealed her ancestor’s resistance and resilience in nineteenth century America and their connection to African-American thought leaders such as Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, and others. Her ancestor, Isaac Rice, Sr., was an abolitionist whose home in Newport is still owned by her family. The home was a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 2021, she portrayed her Jamestown ancestor, Olivia Rice, during the JHS Cemetery Tour.

Kimberly is a native of Maryland with deep family ties to New England. She holds a BA from Towson State University (MD) and a JD from Ohio Northern University (OH). She is licensed to practice law in Maryland and is a certified fundraising executive (CFRE). Kimberly is currently the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
