The 2022 JHS summer events opened with An Evening at the Windmill for JHS members and the following day was the biennial celebration of Windmill Day open to everyone. At An Evening at the Windmill members enjoyed a catered event under tents and had the opportunity to visit the windmill while taking in the spectacular views offered from Windmill Hill. And an unexpected treat for the evening was watching Joe Dutra and his baling machine at work in the neighboring pasture with the backdrop of Narragansett Bay and the soaring Newport bridge.

This year’s Windmill Day was packed with activities for everyone including a tour of the 1787 windmill with the canvas sail cloths attached and arms turning in the wind. Visitors were able to visit the nearby 1786 Friends Meetinghouse while listening to a mix of fun music by the To Be Continued Band and grabbing pizza or gelato from the AMano Food Truck. A demonstration of crochet poppy-making by Eileen Travis, artist participating in Jamestown Art Center’s Outdoor Art Experience: Poppies was fascinating as she explained the creative process behind her artwork which was displayed in a field of grass next to the windmill.
